Shame is often called the secret emotion because most people who are ashamed are also ashamed of feeling ashamed, so they seldom discuss it with others (including therapists) or make any attempt to resolve it. So how can we help clients recover from shame if they have a hard time admitting to it, much less talking about why they feel it? In this workshop, we'll discuss how to distinguish between shame about behavior that elicits public disapproval and a more severe shame about perceived flaws in the nature of the self. Through a live demonstration and small-group exercises, we'll explore a method for helping clients identify and change the basic content and structure of their subjective experience of shame, without having to reveal the content to the therapist. We'll conclude with a discussion of how to help clients rapidly develop the inner resources and self-empowerment to protect themselves in the future from shame imposed by others.
