Session #: 717-616
Presenter(s): David Treadway, Ph.D.
Session Length: 2 hr. 00 min. Event: 2007 Networker Annual Symposium Date: March 15-18, 2007
The "graying of America" is a reality we see in our mirrors and our clients, yet the challenges related to aging for both therapists and clients receive scant attention in training programs and journals. This workshop will examine how aging triggers identity issues as powerful as those of those of adolescence at the same time that we're coping with critical life-cycle changes, such as children leaving home, a parent's illness or death, physical and financial worries, and retirement. We'll discuss ways for therapists to deal with their own issues around aging, its impact on our work, and our countertransference with aging clients. Participants will learn specific approaches to use to help clients embrace this challenging stage of life. We'll also explore ways of deepening our spiritual life, making peace with our past, cultivating wisdom and joy both professionally and personally, and facing our future gracefully.
