Certain clients test a therapist's skill and patience. They take more time in therapy, require more energy output, are frequently in crisis, and, in general, are the most difficult clients a therapist sees. This workshop will focus on the resistant, recalcitrant, and relapse-prone client. It'll show how developing a careful diagnostic profile can lead to realistic expectations of the client, and a workable treatment plan. The presenter will demonstrate how to implement a diagnostic procedure to determine the severity of the problem and use the results to select the appropriate cognitive-behavioral technique, depending on the level of dysfunction. We'll also explore the differences between cognitive, behavioral, affective, biological, and situational/systemic interventions with difficult clients.
