Many agency-based programs for poor families, designed by mental health and social services experts, fail because they don't bother to get input from the families targeted to participate. But these families, often labeled "resistant" or "unmotivated," eagerly engage in programs that they've helped define and produce in collaboration with professionals. In this workshop, you'll learn the 10 steps of the Collaborative Family Program Development (CFPD) model, which has been shown to be successful with homeless families, domestic-violence survivors, and first-generation Latina immigrant families. Using videotaped examples and discussion, we'll demonstrate how we build agency-wide program-development teams, incorporate cultural sensitivity into program design, conduct empowering informational interviews, incorporate family experiences and suggestions, and partner with families to evaluate program effectiveness.
