Session #: 717-428
Presenter(s): R. Reid Wilson, Ph.D.
Session Length: 2 hr. 00 min. Event: 2007 Networker Annual Symposium Date: March 15-18, 2007
Novelty frightens us. It's as if we were hard wired to dread anything unexpected that seems to pose a threat to our safe, familiar, often uninspiring comfort zones. But novelty and change are also sources of creativity, joy, the feeling of being truly alive and fully awake. In a real sense, the capacity to accept and even enjoy novelty is a measure of mental health. In this workshop, we'll talk about how to help clients challenge their rigid frames of reference, tolerate risk, and even flourish in uncertainty. We'll discuss Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi's theory that Flow, the ability to become totally absorbed in an activity, enables people to override their anxieties. You'll leave with four practical methods to help people break out of their ruts, become more curious and courageous, challenge their own resistance to change, and begin viewing life as an exciting game. (This session will continue with Workshop 528.)
