Most baby boomers with aged and disabled parents want to provide all the loving care needed. But over time, care giving can become a prolonged and exhausting ordeal of endless chores, skewed family dynamics, and intensely conflicted emotions that sap adult children psychologically and physically. In this workshop, we'll identify seven essential tasks all caregivers need to address, describe effective ways for therapists to ally with help-resistant caregivers, and suggest how to normalize and neutralize ambivalence, so adult children can both strengthen their bonds with failing parents and avoid burnout. Through videotapes and discussion, we'll also address how to resolve conflicts about what's best for Mom or Dad, as well as existential and spiritual issues that frequently arise.
