New scientific evidence reveals that the true cause of most chronic back pain isn't damaged spinal disks or other structures, but a cycle of psychological stress, muscle tension, and fear-based avoidance of activity. Mindfulness--awareness and acceptance of present experience--turns out to be a powerful tool for interrupting the cycles maintaining the disorder. This workshop will introduce the Back Sense program, a step-by-step, mind-body approach that integrates advances in rehabilitation medicine with psychodynamic, behavioral, and mindfulness-based techniques. You'll learn how to present evidence to clients showing that back pain isn't due to structural damage or abnormalities, describe the cognitive, affective, and behavioral components of the chronic back pain cycle, and free them of chronic back, neck, and sciatic pain. You'll also learn how to treat other common stress-related conditions.
