Some of the most manipulative, defiant, terrified, anxious, and needy adolescents we treat actually suffer from attachment-trauma problems. Lacking a fundamental sense of trust and belonging, they've never had the kind of primary connection that would enable them to function independently, and typically experience difficulties with executive functioning, lack of empathy, blunted conscience, and low capacity for physical and emotional self-regulation. In this workshop, we'll discuss how to recognize underlying attachment-trauma problems in teens who present with other diagnoses. You'll learn 30 ways to reach and help these youngsters, including relational, self-soothing, narrative problem-solving, and multisystemic strategies. We'll also explore ways of creating a circle of caring adults to compensate for the lost or absent primary attachment figure, to help support these teens and lead them into adulthood.
