Session #: 717-406
Presenter(s): Barry McCarthy, Ph.D.
Session Length: 2 hr. 00 min. Event: 2007 Networker Annual Symposium Date: March 15-18, 2007
The bad news is that second marriages end in divorce almost twice as often as first marriages. The good news is that couples savvy about what to expect from second marriages and willing to work on the particular challenges they face are happier than many couples in first marriages. In this workshop, we'll discuss what factors put second marriages most at risk (and step-parenting isn'tthe biggest issue), what common misperceptions second-time couples have, and what steps they can take to create strong, resilient marital bonds. You'll learn how to help couples avoid common pitfalls, such as using the second marriage to compensate for the failures of the first and trying to create a "perfect" stepfamily. By the workshop's end, you'll have the skills to help remarrying couples set positive, realistic expectations and deal with the inevitable conflicts associated with second marriages.
