Therapists often see fussy, fearful, impulsive children who can't pay attention in school, don't get along with other kids, and are prone to tantrums. Often these problems stem from the child's intensely reactive nervous system and consequent difficulty with emotional and physical self-regulation. In this workshop, we'll describe a wrap-around approach that engages the child, his or her peers, teachers, and family in a multimodal intervention to help the child learn to understand and tolerate his or her body signals. We'll explore ways to help such children develop self-soothing strategies, acquire social-reasoning skills, pick up social cues, and express emotion and assertiveness appropriately. You'll leave knowing how to recognize the interplay of constitutional and emotional factors in children with regulatory disorders and put into place effective interventions that include home life, the school, and peer interactions.
