Therapists often overlook the critical first step in helping trauma survivors reclaim a sense of personal power and control: building a foundation of safety based on clear distinctions between the actual trauma in the past and security in the present. We'll discuss a variety of concrete strategies for pacing work with survivors and establishing both internal and external safety as a precondition of trauma treatment. You'll learn how to help clients visualize internal protectors and strong containers for potentially overwhelming emotions, as well a protocols for halting flashbacks and emotional flooding. We'll also discuss the later stages of treatment, including distinguishing between destructive and productive abreactions, as well as the importance of helping clients restory their traumatic experiences. (This session will continue with Workshop 322.)
