Session Length: 2 hr. 00 min. Event: 2007 Networker Annual Symposium Date: March 15-18, 2007
Working with self-harming adolescents and their families can be like riding a runaway roller coaster--just as things seem to be going smoothly, a sudden crisis sends you speeding downhill again. Therapeutic flexibility and improvisation are needed to keep you from getting derailed. In this workshop, you'll learn a collaborative, strengths-based approach that gives teens quick relief from their emotional distress and parents the tools to sooth their teen and themselves. The presenter will teach a variety of strategies and multisensory approaches, including the use of a chilling-out room, mindfulness practices, and art therapy, to help clients deal with pent-up emotions and self-soothe. You'll learn therapeutic questions that elicit the teen's expertise and curiosity and several connection-building strategies that'll strengthen the parent-adolescent relationships and help forge ties with concerned peers and other helping professionals.
