All us hold strong notions of what constitutes the "Good Mother," and tend to assume our ideas are universal. In fact, our individual templates determine not only the way we think about mothers and families, but how we perceive the role and identity of women. In this workshop, we'll look at historical ideas about the Good Mother and the radical changes in these stereotypes since World War II. We'll explore how our own concepts of the Good Mother may differ substantially from those of our clients and how this mutual misunderstanding can subtly undermine our clinical work. You'll leave with a series of useful questions that can reveal often unconscious assumptions about mothers and motherhood with immediate implications for treatment, not to mention great power to shape our view of family relationships.
