Session #: 717-210
Presenter(s): Martha Straus, Ph.D.
Session Length: 2 hr. 00 min. Event: 2007 Networker Annual Symposium Date: March 15-18, 2007
Adolescent girls in a crisis of rage and despair are among the most volatile clients we see. Some try to disappear though self-starvation, others carve indecipherable symbols onto their arms or run away from home, still others hide weeping in their rooms or attempt suicide. This workshop will explore concrete strategies and methods for helping these girls. You'll find out what questions to ask, how to read the subtext of provocative, self-destructive behaviors, and how to rally support from the girl's family and relationship network. We'll cover ways to intervene in cases of eating disorders, self-injury, suicidal gestures, and oppositional/defiant acting out. You'll leave with a toolkit of effective strategies, including harm reduction, inviting resistance, and developing a protective circle of adults around troubled girls.
