Session #: 726-404
Presenter(s): Kenneth V. Hardy
Session Length: 2:00 hr. Event: 2006 Networker Symposium Date: October 19-22, 2006
Adolescents who've been
traumatized frequently act out in
violent or aggressive ways. Labeling
troubled youth as "bad" or "mad"
overlooks the unmourned losses in
their lives and the anesthetizing pull of
violence. In this workshop,
we'll explore a treatment
model that emphasizes
working with violent kids'
rage, counteracting their
devaluation, and
rehumanizing their losses. You'll learn
how to use the Loss Diagram to
identify the tangible and intangible
losses teen clients have experienced, to
help them begin to mourn. We'll
discuss the therapeutic qualities
necessary to accept and validate clients
whose behavior seems intolerable, to
develop therapeutic relationships that
can reclaim those lost kids. We'll give
special attention to the needs of
teenagers in juvenile detention,
residential treatment, and foster care.
