Session #: 726-306
Presenter(s): Lawrence Diller
Session Length: 2:00 hr. Event: 2006 Networker Symposium Date: October 19-22, 2006
Almost weekly, newspapers
trumpet some new controversy over a
psychiatric drug for children. Many
doctors, let alone parents and
clinicians, have trouble keeping the
information straight. In this workshop,
a physician who's also a family
therapist will provide the most up-todate
findings about the pros and cons
of medications for children. Among
the controversies examined will be
reports of new dangers from Ritalin,
the efficacy of
antipsychotic or
anticonvulsant
medications with children
and teens, and the
reported risks of increased
suicidality among kids on SSRIs. You'll
leave with a balanced perspective on a
range of medications and an
understanding of how to be a more
informed advocate for clients in the
face of pressure from schools, doctors,
and the pharmaceutical industry.
