Session Length: 2:00 hr. Event: 2006 Networker Symposium Date: October 19-22, 2006
Therapists who work with same-sex couples often face frustration and failure because they ignore key issues unique to gays and lesbians. This experiential workshop will explore in depth the distinctive problems samesex couples must deal with, including internalized and externalized homophobia; the absence of prescribed gender roles and legal protections, and the lack of culturally sanctioned social support systems. In this workshop, you?ll learn concrete techniques for addressing these sensitive issues. You?ll discover how to bring issues of homophobia into clinical focus using ?cultural resistance? and ?cultural subversion? techniques. You?ll learn how to help partners clarify their commitment and understanding of reciprocal obligations, and how to coach couples to build an intentional family of choice.
