Session #: 714-506
Presenter(s): Karen Smith, Karen Gouze
Session Length: 2hr. 00 min. Event: 2004 Networker Symposium Date: March 4-7, 2004
506 Living with a child with sensory sensitivities can be confusing. Well-intentioned parents can misinterpret "out-of-bounds" behavior as willful troublemaking, causing the emotional heat in a family to rise. The problem is compounded when the family goes to a therapist who is unaware of the sensory connection to emotions and behavior. In this workshop, the presenters will introduce a nonblaming, solution-focused approach to uncooperative behavior based on sensory integration theory. Participants will learn how to recognize negative interactions between a child's specific sensory sensitivities, the sensory characteristics of his surroundings, and the sensory demands of a task. We'll explore the therapy issues relevant to families with a sensory-sensitive child and the gate-keeping role of parents in shielding these children from an overstimulating culture.
