427 Part 1 - Survivors of child sexual abuse and other traumas can create intense challenges and anxiety for clinicians. Adding to the confusion, the symptoms of dissociative identity disorder (DID) are easily misunderstood and misdiagnosed. In this workshop, the presenter will offer a new, depathologized understanding of DID. Participants will explore in depth a range of treatment issues, including dissociation, diagnosis, creating safety, working with alters, regrounding, and integration. Using case examples, videotapes, clients' journal entries, and artwork, the presenter will offer specific strategies to help clinicians be more effective, maintain appropriate boundaries, set limits, and avoid common pitfalls and vicarious traumatization. (This session will continue in Workshop 527.)
