Session #: 714-425
Presenter(s): Brent Atkinson
Session Length: 2hr. 00 min. Event: 2004 Networker Symposium Date: March 4-7, 2004
425 Part 1 - While we assume that we consciously direct our experience, new brain studies suggest our consciousness is largely organized by preprogrammed neural states which turn on and off automatically in response to situational cues. We've all had the experience that, just when we need it most, the neural state governing an appropriate emotional response is nowhere to be found, but for some of our clients, this is a chronic problem. In this workshop, participants will learn about a new paradigm for understanding human experience emerging from the field of Affective Neuroscience. Participants will explore the "big seven" special-purpose neural states--rage, fear, seeking, play, lust, tenderness, and longing--and learn how to increase conscious awareness of them. We'll also learn how to strengthen our ability to short-circuit states that fuel self-defeating attitudes and behaviors, and connect with states that foster personal agency and intimate relationships. (This session will continue in Workshop 525.)
