413 Treating child victims of sexual abuse presents challenges to therapists unlike any others. It's heart-wrenching work in which the therapist feels more than the usual concern for the safety of the client. This workshop will present a simple 3-stage model, based on trauma and systems theory, that interrupts the cycles of abuse and violence and helps victims become survivors. It can be used in outpatient and residential settings, and with adult as well as child clients. Participants will learn how to create a new context for change, challenge old patterns by expanding perceptions of reality, and consolidate treatment to promote integration and prevent relapse. The presenter will discuss ways to deal with denial, empower the nonoffending parent, and create clear boundaries. We'll also explore the factors that determine if and when the perpetrator can be included in the therapy.
