Session #: 714-409
Presenter(s): R. Reid Wilson
Session Length: 2hr. 00 min. Event: 2004 Networker Symposium Date: March 4-7, 2004
409 Anxious, phobic, and panic-prone clients hate and fear their disturbing symptoms--difficulty breathing, heart palpitations, clammy palms, nervous stomach, dizziness--almost as much as they hate the stimuli that bring them on. Some treatment approaches rely on relaxation techniques and cognitive strategies to help palliate symptoms even before gradually exposing clients to the feared stimuli. But this often leaves clients still preoccupied with avoiding the symptoms of their anxiety, dependent on "safety crutches," and vulnerable to anxiety-provoking circumstances that are strong enough to overcome their learned skills. In this workshop, participants will learn an exposure approach that will enable their clients to embrace the symptoms of their anxiety and reduce their power to inspire fear and avoidance. With case studies and videotapes, the presenter will demonstrate how to shift the "anxiety disorder game" in a way that teaches clients to move beyond simply managing their fears to changing their relationship to anxiety.
