Session #: 714-313
Presenter(s): Karen Smith
Session Length: 2hr. 00 min. Event: 2004 Networker Symposium Date: March 4-7, 2004
313 American public schools are in trouble. Teachers are anxious and overwhelmed; parents are disengaged; children are acting up, dropping out, and unleashing their rage against a system that's failing them. Therapists who work from a systems perspective are uniquely qualified to help these children and their families. In this workshop, we'll discuss how to help families with typical school-based problems, such as low self-esteem, oppositional behavior, and academic underachievement. We'll explore the factors that underlie these problems, including peer and teacher relations, dysfunctional family routines, and antagonistic school interactions. Participants will learn how to assess school-related issues, facilitate cocaretaking relationships between home and school, and make effective in-school interventions.
