Session #: 714-309
Presenter(s): Martha B. Straus
Session Length: 2hr. 00 min. Event: 2004 Networker Symposium Date: March 4-7, 2004
309 Any therapist who's ever tried to engage an anxious, sullen, or confused child who refuses to talk knows the meaning of frustration and futility. Yet often the effects of trauma can leave young clients unprepared for talk-based treatment. For these kids, we need an entirely new, nonclinical means of communication that doesn't depend on words. This workshop will explore the many meanings of a kid's silence, how it can work for--not against--the therapeutic relationship, and how therapists can manage their own anxious and angry reactions to troubled, noncommunicative children. Participants will learn how to use empathy and respect, community involvement, and a circle of adults to foster competence and creativity. They'll also take away a "toolkit" of activities and interventions to help these kids develop pride and a capacity for connection.
