230 Part 1 - Our therapy techniques often emphasize seducing clients into change out of fear that simply telling them the truth might scare them away. In contrast, this workshop will demonstrate that, when done with skill and care, we can be much more effective in getting clients to take in tough feedback and hard truths than many of us think, enabling our work to go deeper in a much shorter timeframe. We'll emphasize 8 keys to telling the truth effectively, including how to normalize clients' limitations, avoid taking a one-up position ourselves, teach them appropriate responses to challenging feedback, bring in the family-of-origin legacy, and amplify the negative consequences of not changing. Participants will also learn how to teach individuals and couples methods for maintaining boundaries within their communication that will enable them to tell the truth to each other more directly, without triggering anger or toxic shame. (This session will continue in Workshop 330.)
