221 Kids with attachment traumas--many of them adopted or in foster care--lack a fundamental sense of belonging and trust, and can be among the most difficult, defiant, and needy clients we treat. With all their emotional, behavioral, and attention problems, these adolescents can be an overwhelming therapeutic challenge. This workshop will focus on an integrated approach to recognizing and treating attachment disorders in teens. It will make sense of their behavior in light of their primary motivation--staying in control at all costs--and present techniques for avoiding power struggles and building relationships. The presenter will discuss what doesn't work with these clients and why, and offer dozens of techniques for building their competence, increasing their problem-solving abilities, and improving their self-regulation.
