219 For some time, the conventional clinical wisdom in treating domestic violence has been based on the categories of victim and perpetrator--the "good guy, bad guy" approach. This workshop will explore a new paradigm for treating violent couples that takes therapists out of the rescuing business. We'll discuss the concept that imbalances of power and control characterize both partners in violent couples. We'll explore how to build on strengths within each individual to change destructive patterns. Participants will learn how to manage their own anxiety about dealing with volatile couples, and how to foster attitudes of self-responsibility within both partners. We'll also discuss the role of the limbic brain and changing neural templates in abusive relationships.
