520 Too often, the overwhelmed parents of a child with severe behavior problems want their kids "fixed," but won't help the therapist make this happen. How can we get through this impasse? This experiential workshop will demonstrate a structured approach for working with parents and their out-of-control kids. Via video, case examples, and role-plays, you'll learn a 7-step, psychoeducational model to reestablish parental authority and reclaim attachment and love. After helping the parents understand why their child is out of control, the model deals with such issues as how to reduce parents' knee-jerk reactions, how to contract for change, how to set up creative consequences, how to reintroduce nurturance once behavior comes under control, and how to look for the emotional undercurrents that can block success. You'll leave with a full toolkit for helping parents improve their parenting skills.
