512 Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT) is based on the principle that the best way to change an emotion?whether shame, guilt, anger, or fear? is with another emotion. In this workshop, the presenter will present a clear framework for clinically assessing and distinguishing between primary emotions (related to basic needs), secondary emotions (that have a defensive function), and instrumental emotions (used for interpersonal maneuvering). Using these distinctions, we'll learn how to design strategies and interventions to restructure emotional experience and expand the client's emotional repertoire. Participants will leave with a variety of techniques drawn from psychodrama, Gestalt, focusing, and client-centered approaches to help clients use emotion as a path to healing.
