Session #: 715-504
Presenter(s): Thom Rutledge
Session Length: 2hr. 00 min. Event: 2005 Networker Annual Symposium Date: March 17-20, 2005
504 Clients with addictions?whether to alcohol, drugs, sex, gambling, or food?fight a war between the part of themselves that wants to be in recovery and the part that's in denial. When the therapist innocently joins the war on the side of recovery, denial digs in its heels. So how can we clinicians get out of the power struggle with denial? This workshop presents an approach that personifies the culprit behind the addiction, so that the client can be separate to disagree with it. You'll learn techniques, including the use of humor, to mobilize the client's desire?no matter how small?for recovery. You'll also discover how to challenge the perfectionism underlying the problem, and distinguish between healthy and neurotic fear, so that clients can move beyond fear's control.
