Session #: 715-426
Presenter(s): Lisa Ferentz
Session Length: 2hr. 00 min. Event: 2005 Networker Annual Symposium Date: March 17-20, 2005
426 Part 1 - The DSM offers a variety of labels for clients who present with severe symptoms, such as self-injurious behavior, eating disorders, addictions, and, of course, borderline personality. This two-part workshop will reframe symptoms as an active attempt to creatively cope with traumatic situations in the client's family of origin. We'll explore the challenges of attaching to abusive caretakers, the evolution of "necessary" coping responses, and the inevitable emergence of adult "symptoms." As we explore the advantages of depathologizing clients, we'll identify some fundamental guidelines for trauma treatment, including creating safety; using the body as a compass; anchoring; pacing; working with abreactions and flashbacks; and the use of art therapy. (This session continues in Workshop 526.)
