Session #: 715-425
Presenter(s): Steven Alper
Session Length: 2hr. 00 min. Event: 2005 Networker Annual Symposium Date: March 17-20, 2005
425 Part 1 - Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) is an evidenced-based approach to depression, based on the work of Jon Kabat-Zinn, that shifts attention away from depressive thoughts to the client's moment-to-moment experience. This workshop will offer a variety of methods for helping clients learn to stand outside their thought stream, become more embodied, and refocus on their resilience and inner strength. Together, we'll practice mindfulness meditation and explore how to enhance the therapeutic skills of presence, radical acceptance, and empathic attunement. We'll discuss how to apply specific mindfulness practices, such as the body scan, yoga, and the 3-minute breathing space, in work with depressed clients, and pay special attention to a structured, relapse-prevention plan for clients who've recovered from depression. (This session will continue with Workshop 525.)
