Session #: 715-413
Presenter(s): Linda Perlman Gordon, Susan Morris Shaffer
Session Length: 2hr. 00 min. Event: 2005 Networker Annual Symposium Date: March 17-20, 2005
413 Today's twentysomethings are facing an unprecedented cultural shift. What used to be the traditional markers of adulthood?getting married, starting a family, and earning a living?are increasingly being delayed. This shift is causing as much confusion for parents as for the adult children. In this workshop, we'll explore how to set more realistic standards of adulthood, focusing on empathy, personal responsibility, respectful interdependence, financial independence and cultural competence, as well as how parents can foster these characteristics in their pre-adolescents. We'll also discuss the concrete skills required for parenting in this "new normal" stage of development.
