Playback session - audio sample Symptoms of trauma--including dissociation, numbing, chronic anxiety, psychosomatic pain, and flashbacks--often are difficult to resolve because the original traumatic memory or issue remains unprocessed and unavailable to the conscious mind. Brainspotting is a powerful, focused treatment method that works by identifying, processing, and releasing core neurophysiological sources of traumatic symptoms. By following a "Brainspot"--the eye position or movement associated with the activation of trauma-related brain mechanisms (in the limbic system, for example)--while clients mindfully attend to their emotional and somatic experiences, the therapist can release emotions that typically are out of reach of consciousness. Brainspotting is compatible with a range of therapeutic approaches, opening a "window" to clients' neurophysiologically-based trauma responses, while enhancing the ability to engage them in a safe and trusting relationship.
