Session #: 718-430
Presenter(s): Nancy Napier
Session Length: 2 hr. 00 min. Event: 2008 Networker Annual Symposium Date: March 13-16, 2008
The human nervous system is designed to be finely attuned to danger and to recognize safety. But when people have experienced trauma, their nervous systems can become stuck in the "on" position, constantly responding to threats that no longer exist. Research and experience show that the left brain alone can't re-regulate the amygdala through words, reason, or logic. This experiential workshop will demonstrate Somatic Experiencing, a powerful method for working with traumatized clients, grounded in the understanding that the body is hardwired to heal. Participants will learn specific tools for reading clients' psychological and physical cues and freeing them from helplessness, overstimulation, and collapse. The presenter will demonstrate techniques to help clients complete their natural response to threat and guide them into engaging their body's normal relaxation response to rebalance their physiology. (This session will continue with Workshop 530.)
