Session #: 718-421
Presenter(s): Charles Parker
Session Length: 2 hr. 00 min. Event: 2008 Networker Annual Symposium Date: March 13-16, 2008
In spite of stunning recent advances in brain science and what they tell us about how our minds operate, they can seem too complicated and arcane to have much relevance for day-to-day practice. But the more we learn about the profound impact of neurobiological forces on our emotions and mental functioning, the harder it is too ignore when we're evaluating the complex difficulties our clients bring to us. In this workshop, we'll explore how even the most resolutely unscientific therapist can begin to effectively use some of this cutting-edge knowledge in assessing and addressing clients. You'll learn how to determine when sending clients to get SPECT brain imaging is appropriate; how neurotransmitters and psychopharmaceuticals interact and how this knowledge can help you understand the impact of medications on your clients; and how out-of-balance hormone levels ("adrenal fatigue" and estrogen dominance, for example) affect the brain. We'll review the surprising impact other biological factors, like nutrition, can have on brain function and psychological well-being. We'll conclude with a discussion about the possibility of setting up an ongoing Internet "knowledge network" among the presenter, participants, and experts in various brain-related fields. (This session will continue with Workshop 521.)
