Session #: 718-405
Presenter(s): Ron Taffel
Session Length: 2 hr. 00 min. Event: 2008 Networker Annual Symposium Date: March 13-16, 2008
We all know the classic problems facing child and teen therapists—or think we do. But after speaking with mental health professionals and educators across the country, the presenter will report on how the issues of clinical practice with kids today have been dramatically transformed. Together, we'll explore how parental love and limits are being internalized differently by 21st-century kids; the emerging synthesis of the "unique minds," temperament, and social-emotional learning approaches; and how therapists can address the critical loss of magic, metaphor, and imagination in kid-world. We'll focus on how therapists can inspire passion and compassion in place of detached irony and social cruelty toward peers; how we can heal the profound schism between school, parents, and isolated families; and, finally, which behavioral disorders and diagnosis-driven interventions are beginning to explode nationwide. You'll come away with a road map for the future in your work with children and teens—what we're all going to be doing the day after tomorrow.
