Many of the problems individual clients and families bring to therapy are exacerbated by the social fragmentation and lack of connection endemic to our culture. Families become isolated islands adrift in anonymous, commuter-inhabited enclaves, and children—who spend much of their out-of-school time alone with their computers, TVs, iPods, and cell phones—don't get the chance to develop the social skills they'll need to build relationships throughout their lives. In this workshop, the presenter will describe a model for linking client families into strong, mutually supportive, healing communities—or "culture circles." These culture circles help people reframe what they regard as their individual or family problems in terms of social and cultural issues and widespread assumptions about race, class, gender, and power. You'll learn how to help these culture circles actually address difficult issues and develop caretaking exchanges among client families. You'll also find out how to build an economically viable practice using this approach that doesn't depend on managed care.
